Soccer Season

Katie decided that she wanted to give soccer a shot.

Before the season began Eric took Katie to get her shin guards and soccer shorts, which were pink, of course. I was impressed by this because not only did he come home with pink but he also purchased soccer equipment, which he jokingly refers to as the "communist sport".

This was her first time playing an organized sport. It was so interesting watching her slowly pick up on the the fundamentals of the sport. At first she was so nervous and timid, which was weird to see. She seemed more interested in cheering on her team members and encouraging them than she was in actually touching the ball herself.

But by the end of the season she was going hard after the ball and even scored a goal or two.

Her encouraging spirit continued to shine through.

Not only was it her first taste at sports but it was our first taste of sports through the eyes of a parent. I was surprised by how quiet I was on the sidelines, trying so hard not to be that obnoxious parent who thinks they are the coach. Eric was so good at balancing encouragement with challenges for Katie.

I think that we are going to take a break from soccer this fall, with the new baby coming and football season. But I was amazed how hard it was for me to make this decision. Already you feel the pressure of not wanting your kid to fall behind. Thankfully Eric is able to see things through a balanced lens, which helped in making the decision. The ballot is still out on what the next sport will be.

Oh, and this post wouldn't be complete with out giving credit to all her adoring fans!

  1. Katie - We were happy you played soccer this year and had so much fun! We had fun taking you to practice sometimes and watching you play. You got better and stronger as the season progress. Way to go to hang in there to the end - and your team was a WINNER! Love you much - Grandma
